The Israel Defense Forces’ (IDF) onslaught in Gaza has shown no signs of abating, with Tel Aviv killing more than 300 Palestinians within 48 hours alone in at least 26 massacres.
The latest attacks have struck leisure spaces, family homes, markets, hospitals and aid distribution points operated by the controversial U.S. and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). Most of the victims have been women and children.
Since Oct. 7, 2023, Israel’s military campaign in Gaza has resulted in over 47,000 Palestinians killed, wounded or missing, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. The escalating violence has pushed the Strip’s already crippled infrastructure to the brink, with burial space now scarce,
This has prompted the Palestinian Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs to issue a warning Wednesday, July 2, about the critical shortage of burial space. The IDF has reportedly completely or partially destroyed over 40 cemeteries across the besieged strip, further contributing to the shrinking availability of burial space and the depletion of existing graveyards.
“The crisis is worsening due to the occupation’s blockade on the entry of food, medicine, shrouds, construction materials and other essentials needed for grave preparation,” the ministry said in a statement. “This is preventing martyrs from being honored and buried in accordance with Islamic law.”
Also on Wednesday, a 500lb U.S.-made MK-82 bomb was dropped on a Gaza City beach cafe, killing 33 people. Photojournalist Ismail Abu Hatab and artist Frans al-Salmi were among the casualties. Mohammad al-Baqa, one of the owners of the cafe, recounted gathering “a big sack full of human flesh” in the aftermath.
Similar horrors unfolded at Mustafa Hafez School, where displaced families were sheltering before an airstrike killed 16. Included in this casualty count are 13 members of the Hajila family. Meanwhile, desperate Palestinians awaiting food aid report being fired upon without warning by American contractors guarding GHF aid distribution sites. Since late May, at least 600 people have been killed in such attacks, with survivors alleging security personnel resorted to lethal force.
Two U.S. contractors told the Associated Press that armed guards were “unqualified [and] unvetted,” and operated with impunity, shooting and injuring civilians. Though GHF denies the allegations, forensic analysis by Haaretz and testimonies from Israeli soldiers confirm that troops have been ordered to shoot unarmed aid seekers.
International organizations accuse Israel of leveraging starvation as a weapon, with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East demanding immediate investigations. Meanwhile, humanitarian groups such as Oxfam, Save the Children and Amnesty International have called for the GHF’s closure.
Norwegian Dr. Mads Gilbert, a longtime Gaza medic, condemned the operation as “a sham” aimed at “terrorizing and killing” civilians. Yet Tel Aviv insists the war is necessary to dismantle Hamas, despite mounting evidence of indiscriminate violence.
Nearly 20 months into the conflict, Gaza’s cemeteries are overflowing, with makeshift graves dug in hospital yards and homes. The crisis underscores what analysts describe as a deliberate campaign to render the enclave uninhabitable – a strategy with chilling historical parallels.
